Online course or membership — which should you choose?

A course closes a result. A membership keeps a rhythm. A program walks a calendar. The choice is a relationship model, not a checkout button.

A membership platform is not “a course on a loop.” An online subscription makes sense when someone has a reason to come back after they would have finished a normal program. Otherwise they buy once, download, and cancel the card.

In madebyu a course, a membership, and an event are separate products. Below is a decision frame, not a ranking.

Course — a finished result

A beginning, a middle, an end. A one-time price. Good when the promise can be checked off. Bad when you add lessons every month “because that is what membership does.”

Membership — ongoing value

A library, new material on a cadence, classes with no end date. Monthly or yearly price. It needs a cadence you cannot fake with a dump of 40 videos on launch day.

Program — structured change

Often 4–12 weeks, a required order, sometimes a cohort. Close to a course, but with a calendar. How to assemble an online program.

Community — relationship

Value from people, not from lessons. madebyu does not have a ready product forum today. If community is the core of the offer, you run it where you already are (list, meetings, an external tool), and you keep the site and payments at home. Do not promise a “community app” at checkout.

Live event — time

One date, shared energy, then maybe a recording as a separate product. High price, few seats, your calendar in the middle.

One-time course

  • A finished promise
  • Simpler checkout
  • A lighter rhythm after publish
  • Harder monthly revenue

Membership

  • Rhythm and return visits
  • A Stripe subscription
  • You have to feed the offer
  • Churn if the archive stands still

  • If you cannot promise monthly production — do not start with a subscription.
  • If you have a finished skill to teach — a course. You can add a membership later as a library or a club.
  • Price: how to price.
