Online courses

How to create an online program instead of a regular course?

A program has a calendar and an order. It is not a “watch whenever” playlist — it is a path with weeks, assignments, and a finish line.

A regular course can be an archive. An online program says: this week this, next week that, at the end you deliver this. People finish more often when there is a rhythm — even if the lessons are recorded.

The difference is not video length. It is a promise with a date or a number of weeks. A “watch in any order” course leaves the student alone. A program leads. madebyu assembles both as products on your site — the model is your decision, not a marketing switch.

Models that work

The examples below are skeletons, not templates. Change the niche, keep the rhythm.

  • 4 weeks of pilates: three sessions a week, progression, not random videos.
  • 6 weeks of marketing: offer, content, conversations, close.
  • A photography masterclass: a weekend or 5 intense days, then assignments.
  • A nutrition plan: weeks, lists, recordings at the counter — not an encyclopedia.
  • A business accelerator: a cohort, deadlines, your presence in office hours.
  • Beauty training: a protocol + a meetup or live, a recorded core.

If you have no calendar and do not want one, go back to a course from scratch. If you want a subscription with no finish line — course or membership.

Program → modules → lessons → content

  1. 01Program: the promise and the number of weeks.
  2. 02Modules: one week or one skill stage.
  3. 03Lessons: 8–20 minutes, one assignment.
  4. 04Content: video, PDF, list, exercise — whatever the lesson is empty without.

The week’s assignment

Every week closes with something you can show: a recording, a photo, a list, an offer. Without that the program is a series. In the student dashboard lesson order should reflect weeks, not file alphabet.

Schedule

Self-paced with a suggested week (an email “you are in module 2”) or a cohort with a start date. Cohort = your calendar in the price. Self-paced = cheaper, easier to abandon.

A cohort needs a sign-up window and a “we start then” message. Self-paced needs an exceptionally clear first lesson, because nobody is standing next to them. In madebyu both can be a priced product — you build rhythm with the program and what you say on the page.

Payments

Most often one-time for the whole program. A deposit for a live with limited seats. A subscription rarely fits 6 weeks with an end — then someone feels they are paying for something that already sits there.

In madebyu you set the product price and publish the program page. Checkout and access after purchase are on your site. Do not promise installments checkout does not have. More on numbers: how to price a course.

Student experience

They see which week they are in. They do not get lost in 40 episodes. The first lesson opens immediately. That is a post-purchase dashboard, not a drive folder.

Recordings: how to record a course at home. Selling a sign-up window: how to sell courses.
